PhD position in Diagnostics of Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance

The Department of Biotechnology at the Faculty of Applied Ecology, Agricultural Sciences, and Biotechnology (ALB) at the University of Inland Norway (INN) invites applications for a PhD position. The successful candidate will work in the group of Professor Rafi Ahmad, focusing on the development of a proof-of-concept decision-making diagnostic system for rapid, accurate, and sensitive on-site detection of infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Key Responsibilities

  • Optimizing novel methods for culture-independent sample preparation for body fluids.
  • Performing metagenomic and potentially photonics analysis on clinical samples.
  • Correlation of generated data and proof-of-concept evaluation in clinical settings.

The position is for three years and requires the candidate to be based at the workplace in Hamar.

Krav

  • Applicants must hold a master's degree in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Candidates must have a strong academic background with an average grade of B or better from their master's program.
  • Prior experience with methods development, including nucleic acid extraction or host cell/DNA depletion, is required.
  • Hands-on experience with Oxford Nanopore sequencing technologies and the entire sequencing workflow is essential.
  • Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in spoken and written English, documented through an approved test if from a non-English-speaking country.
  • Experience in analyzing large-scale biological datasets, including whole-genome and metagenomic sequencing, is required.
