Job Description

PhD Candidate in Measuring Uncertainty and Risk with Agentic AI for Decision-Oriented Modelling

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at NTNU is seeking a PhD Candidate to work on the interface of numerical mathematics, agentic and generative AI models, and computer science. This position is part of the national AI research center, aiD (AI for Decisions).

About the project

Many critical decisions in science and engineering depend on computational models that are inherently uncertain. This PhD project addresses the challenge of translating uncertainty into actionable risk measures by researching agentic programming frameworks. The goal is to develop specialized AI agents that collaborate to design, execute, and evaluate uncertainty quantification (UQ) workflows under computational constraints.

Duties of the position

  • Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate.
  • Conduct high-quality research within the scope of the project.
  • Contribute to research publications in leading international journals and conferences.
  • Participate in international activities such as conferences, workshops, and research stays.
  • Disseminate research results to scientific and broader audiences.
  • Collaborate with academic and industrial project partners.
  • Implement and test algorithms in high-performance open-source scientific software.

Requirements

  • You must have a relevant Master's degree in mathematics or equivalent with an average grade of B or better.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's Doctoral Programme.
  • You must have documented programming experience relevant to scientific computing, such as Python, MATLAB, Julia, or C++.
  • You must have good written and oral communication skills in English.
  • You must be able to work independently, demonstrate strong analytical skills, and collaborate constructively with project partners.
