Job Description

PhD Research Fellow in Meteorology

We invite applications for a position as PhD Research Fellow in Meteorology available at the Department of Geoscience at the University of Oslo. The fellowship period is three years, with a potential fourth year involving career-promoting work.

Job Description

This PhD position is funded by the Research Council of Norway through the project EEIwarm, which investigates the physical underpinnings of the recent acceleration in global warming, with a focus on Earth’s energy imbalance (EEI) and ocean heat content (OHC). The primary research tool is the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM3).

Key Tasks

  • Analyze observational datasets to quantify cloud and radiative flux variations associated with the rapid warming of 2023–2025.
  • Apply atmosphere-only NorESM3 simulations to explore drivers of the rapid warming.
  • Diagnose atmosphere-only and coupled NorESM3 simulations to link cloud processes and EEI anomalies to the rapid warming.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Meteorology or a related field.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong programming skills and experience working with large data sets.
  • Relevant experience in analyzing output from, and ideally also running, weather and/or climate models.
